Vernallis' Theory - Post 9

Lady GaGa - 'Poker Face'

Camerawork

  • Close ups are used to show parts of her body and her face which cleverly introduces the artist.
  • The framing throughout the entire video comes across as very disjointed and kooky as there are areas that often aren't a main focus in other videos used to be more of a focus in this video.
  • There are establishing shots which show the location and the dance performance which comes across as very elaborate.
Mise-en-scene
  • Structurally the video is very choppy and the editing causes the video to be very quirky and in some ways off-putting because of it's very in your face uniqueness.
  • Visually the video narrates the lyrics by using imagery that relates closely to what they are saying without telling a very obvious and long winded story.
  • There is a narrative throughout although it's not very obvious.
  • The costume and locations are chosen well to add to the quirky atmosphere surrounding the entire video and I feel like this; alongside the camera work, causes the whole image of the artist to be very striking.
Editing

  • Jump cuts are used throughout the video which helps in giving it a very disjointed feeling as we have to see lots of different locations very quickly and the events on screen are confusing to see, especially this fast.
  • The editing tends to match up with the rhythm to give the video a very sleek pace that continues throughout the entire video.
  • The editing breaks lots of rules such as the 180 degree rule which again gives it this sort of off beat and quirky style.
  • The editing is very obvious and it makes the video and artist come across as very elaborate.
Soundtrack
  • The artist does lots of movements to the music which helps with the editing to make it look more like a performance.
  • The soundtrack includes some quirks that make it more personalised.
